March 16th: Homesteading in Maine

featuring Kirsten Lie-Nielsen of Hostile Valley Living Farm

6:00 - 7:30PM ON ZOOM

Kirsten Lie-Nielsen is an author and educator who has revitalized a 200 year-old Maine homestead and the woman behind Hostile Valley Living Instagram and website. She has used principles of permaculture to reclaim an overgrown and abandoned 93-acre farm, and and to cultivate gardens, orchards and animals. She has written two books, So You Want to Be a Modern Homesteader, and The Modern Homesteader’s Guide to Keeping Geese. She offers classes and consultations on topics including livestock, gardening and lifestyle, and cooking.

Kirsten will discuss moving to Maine and becoming a modern homesteader, how homesteading can be accessible to all, permaculture, and her personal journey raising animals and food, and living off the land. As we get ready for the growing season, she will chat about garden planning for year-round abundance, preserving the harvest, and crop storage.

For the March meal theme, “From the Pantry, Freezer and Root Cellar”, dig into the stash of food that you put by from last year’s garden or utilize foods that you have on hand in the cupboard, freezer, or root cellar. As always, complement with fresh local produce from the market!

Prizes will be awarded for the most use of local food in the meal, creative recipe choice and photo submissions, best use of theme, as well as a random drawing of all ticket holders.

The prizes for this event are: a $50 Reny’s gift card, two copies of Kirsten’s Book So You Want to be a Modern Homesteader, a one hour Zoom Consultation with Kirsten, and some of her dehydrated sourdough starter with detailed instructions!
